Late Blight and community and backyard gardens

A timely and appropriate opinion article in the NY Times about late blight and how once we garden, we're hooked into the world agriculture system. Is buying a tomato plant that's been shipped 2000 miles any different than buying a tomato that's had the same trip? Perhaps we should start a greenhouse for selling seedlings?
